A tough year at Williams has just seen it next twist. After crashing in FP3 causing him to be unable to qualify, Logan Sargeant is no longer at Williams.
The American came in with the hope of igniting the interest of fans back home and giving them a driver they could root for from their home country, especially with F1’s popularity in the States. However, a less-than-stellar rookie season (to put it lightly) put his status in doubt. New Williams team principal James Vowles backed the young driver, saying they would give him another chance.
Sargeant failed to deliver on that chance, suffering from much of the same mistakes that plagued his rookie season. He was already on the outs with the team by the beginning of summer break, with Williams signing Carlos Sainz to a multi-year deal. However, the expectation was Sargeant would finish the season given the awkwardness of inserting a driver into the current lineup knowing they’d be there only temporarily. Logan’s crash in FP3 changed all that.
With the American out, Williams has inserted Argentina’s Franco Colapinto into his seat. The second-year F2 driver has performed well this year, placing P6 in the drivers' championship standings.
Colapinto will get to show his stuff over the final nine races of 2024 and hopefully does enough to earn a seat either as a reserve driver or potentially grabbing one of the two seats available on the grid (with Kimi Antonelli's announcement at Mercedes expected this week) should that become an option.
For all his struggles, he did leave us one thing to look back on for the 2024 season, which is summed up well by X user ahmed boakbah:
